Since Tengger charter was found in 851 Saka (929 A.D) Strengthen with Penanjakan Charter in 1324 Saka (1402 A.D) stated that there was a village in Tengger mountain range called Wandalit settled by Hulun Hyang (God Fellow – Holy People) where its surounding called hila hila (holy). That is why Tengger area is a special perdikan land which free from tax fee of the centre states in Majapahit.

Tenggerese who are good follower of God and always do their custom strickly, has historical relationship with Majapahit. The kings and his staff have treated, specially, Tenggerese who are really interesting. No wonder if there is difference in characters between Hindu followers is Tengger and Bali.

Strickly, in keeping custom for centuries, without influenced by world’s change is an interesting factor for scientists, especially, anthropologists from our country or other countries to do some research. So there are so many version of the unique of Tenggerese in Probolinggo. The description can be in the forth of tale, folk tale, serat and kidung, legend and science report. Foreign scientist who had research in historical of Tenggerese are Nancy J. Smith and Robert W Hefner, based on their own version.

Tenggerese are always connected with ritual ceremonies or custom ceremonies. Because sesanti “Titi Luri” which hold strickly, the ceremonies always be held without any changes, just as the elder generation in centuries ago (Titi Luri means follow the elder generations traps on continue the religion, belief and custom of anchestor heritagely).

Besides well known as good God follower, and very strick in keeping custom, Tenggerese are well known, too, as honest people, and hard workers. They live simply, safely and peacefully. There almost never troubles, fighting on stealing. They work together supported by their high tolerantion. There is a special thing for Tenggerese. They always wear “sarung” wherever they go. Men, Women, Adult on children, wear “sarung”. Tenggerese still believe in “Roh Halus” (powerful thing), Sacre place and some myths.

The groups of Tenggerese Society are led by a “dukun” (medicinman). The “dukun” are led by Mr. Mudjono as a leader of the “dukun”. The “dukun” who are both a leader of religion and of the custom has to be responsible for conducting traditional ceremonies. In doing his duties, the “dukun” is helped by some officers, there are:
  1. Wong Sepuh, he is the one who helps preparing sacrifice in the death-ceremonies.
  2. A “Legen”, the one who helps preparing equipments and sacrifice in wedding parties.
  3. Dukun Sunat, the one who helps carrying out circumcision for boys is different from that in Islam. For Tenggerese boys, the circumcision only cuts off a little skin at the tip of the penis.
  4. Dukun Bayi (a midwife), one who helps women in childbirth.
Seeing a fact that the role of “dukun” is very important in Tengger, the people decide that every village has to be led by a “dukun”. The “dukun” is elected by people with certain requirements : (1) a married man, (2) a descendant of dukun, (3) mastering all incantation or the custom. A test for the “dukun” to be is held in Poten where traditional ceremonies are carried out. The test is carried out coincidentally with Yadnya Kasada.

However, the ancestors of Tenggerese are married couple named Rara Anteng (Teng) and Jaka Seger (Ger). The combination of the two syllables were than abbreviated as Tengger. Rara Anteng was a daughter of Prabu Brawijaya and Garwa Padmi, the last King of Majapahit Kingdom, who had a very beautiful face. She was brought up by a saint named Ki Dadap Putih. He lived in Bromo mount area which at that time was still a jungle.

One day, a commander of Kingdom troops called a “Senopati” who was a descendant of Brahmana named Jaka Seger had a very long journey and passed by the place. He than met Rara Anteng. Both the young man and young girl fell in love and were married out by Resi Ki Dadap Putih at that moment, they become a married couple.

For many years Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger wanted to have a child but God did not give them a child yet. That is why they “practised” asceticism” in Watu Kuta facing Bromo mount. Day and night they orayed to God in order that he granted their wish.

One day, there a natural sign Bromo mountain exploded. The crater exploded the red light, giving a light in the darkness of the night and waking up Rara Anteng’s and Joko Seger’s ascebicism. They believe that the natural sign happened just now was a sign that their wish would come true. But its natural sign followed by a misterious sound that said : that one day when Sang Hyang Widhi (God) wanted to give them children, one of them had to sacrifice to Bromo Crater (Bromo Mountain). The explosion of Bromo crater happened again, it was as a witness that Rara Anteng’s and Jaka Seger’s wish come true but they had to sacrifice one of their children to Bromo crater.

In fact, that sign was true, many days later, Rara Anteng got birth her first child. The name of the first son was Tumenggung Klewung. And than, followed by other children and they had 25 children made them happy. But there was something wondered about the requirement that they had to be fulfilled. Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger always kept their children carefully. Their children suggested to go far away from Bromo carter.

One day, heard the explosion from Bromo carter, the couple wife and husband became restless. They understood the meaning of natural sign, that was warning them to keep the promise. Silently, in their heart there was a gap between keeping the promise and parent’s feeling that loved their children. At last, they decided not to sacrifice one of them. They tried to forget all wonder, to keep the promise to give a requirement step by step, they neglected.”
